Developing courses in multimedia: is an art school the right place?

Interactive multimedia might be taught in a number of higher education environments in addition to art and design. This paper discusses the appropriateness (or otherwise) of Art and Design teaching methods to the learning of this subject, and ends by asking how such methods should perhaps be modified, perhaps not only for the study of multimedia. In order to establish the background to this discussion, we briefly describe the two Master’s programmes in multimedia run by the Centre for Electronic Arts, within a Faculty of Art, Design and Performing Arts which largely conforms to the traditions and practices of an art school.
